The Estimation of De Facto Population

The starting point for us was this simple question; “Why does the public service demand keep growing as the resident population in Seoul is declining? How can we answer to this question with data? The De Facto Population refers to all the individuals who exist in a specific area at a specific time. It includes residents of Seoul as well as tourists, commuters, students and shoppers who enjoys the benefits that Seoul has to offer.As the era of 4th industrial revolution has arrived, we decided to introduce a new population estimation method using cell-phone signal data. In order to estimate the De Facto Population of Seoul, we used the LTE signal data of KT, the Korea Telecommunication Corporation.

Using LTE data to measure the de facto population has not been done in any other cities before.
